What was the name of the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean?
The American sailing ship the Savannah was the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Passengers were scared at first to travel on a ship that had a fire on board – they were terrified the ship might burn in the middle of the ocean. This wasn’t such a funny idea – when the Savannah first steamed to Liverpool in England she was chased by another ship who thought she was on fire and wanted to rescue her!
